What is Disciples Together?
In 2020, our groundbreaking report Disciples Together showed a growing gulf between our work and the reality of life for young people and in the culture at large.
Disciples Together explores how we can embrace change for the benefit of God’s work in the world and outlines steps for our future ministry, and introduces five cultural shifts to help us move to where we need to be. Watch Bishop Steven introduce the report in the short film below and scroll down to download the report.
What does this mean in 2024?
It is time for a step change in how we engage with children, young people and families. We need to hear from children and young people themselves, and actively listen, partnering with them to transform their concerns, dreams, and aspirations into concrete actions.
Amplify aims to transform whispers to waves - to listen to real voices and make real change. Find out more.
A New Chapter: Elevating Youth and Family Ministry in our diocese
On a landmark day, Saturday 9 March 2024, our Diocesan Synod made a pivotal decision, unanimously voting to bring ministry with Children, Youth, and Families (CYPF) into the heart of our mission. Just as Jesus placed a child among the adults to teach the essence of faith, our diocese commits to a renewed focus on faith formation, nurturing spiritual growth and discipling of our youngest members. Watch Bishop Steven's presidential address from the day.
The Decision
In a move that marks a significant milestone, Synod has endorsed a motion that propels us to deepen our engagement with children, young people, families, and schools. This decision, rooted in our shared vision to embody the teachings of Jesus, calls upon every deanery and benefice to develop ambitious yet attainable plans for growth in 2024 and beyond. The motion reads:
“That this Synod endorses the need to significantly increase our engagement with children, young people, families, and schools, building on Disciples Together and to share the good news of Jesus Christ, and calls on every deanery and benefice in 2024 to develop plans for growth.”
Impact & Vision
The spirit of renewal is already palpable across the diocese, with new toddler groups, Messy Churches, and outdoor/forest churches springing to life. These initiatives are drawing in growing numbers of children, young people, and families, filling our community with a sense of hope and anticipation for what the future holds. As we witness the emergence of new life this Spring, we give thanks and praise to God for these signs of vibrant growth.
Next Steps
The journey ahead involves each deanery and benefice mapping out their current CYPF activities and school relationships, to gain a clear understanding of collective strengths and to identify areas where we can expand our reach. Area Deans and Lay Chairs will spearhead the deanery plans, supported by resources and guidance from our team of Discipleship Enablers. Whether it's launching a summer holiday club or developing targeted ministries for teenagers, our shared goal is to fill the gaps in our outreach with innovative, impactful programmes.
Call to Action
This is a collective call to action for all members of our diocese to engage in this exciting journey. Your participation is invaluable, whether through hands on volunteering with CYP in church or school, providing prayer support, refreshments and hand-made cake, or spreading the word and inviting CYPF to church events and activities. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of our children, young people, and families. For more information on how you can get involved, contact your Discipleship Enabler.

“Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.”
Luke 18:16-17 (NRSV)
