Bishop Steven joins call for transparency on climate reporting

More than 100 Christian leaders have signed an open letter raising concerns about climate misinformation on GB News. The letter calls for greater transparency about possible conflicts of interest.

It is addressed to Paul Marshall, the owner of GB News, and highlights the importance of clear, accurate and responsible public discussion about the climate crisis.

A call for openness

The signatories come from a wide range of Christian traditions. They include Rt Revd Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury and Rt Revd Dr Steven Croft, Bishop of Oxford.

They are asking for greater openness about any links between media commentators and fossil fuel interests. They say people should be able to understand the background behind the views they hear.

There are also questions about whether GB News is meeting the standards set by Ofcom. The letter highlights concerns about the amount of climate misinformation on the channel. Researchers reported 953 instances of criticism of climate science and action around the time of the 2024 general election.

The letter also asks for clarity about any personal financial interests in fossil fuels. As of 2023, Paul Marshall’s hedge fund reportedly had £1.8 billion invested in fossil fuels. He has previously criticised efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

In response, the letter says these views are misleading. It points to evidence from economists and experts that moving to cleaner energy could bring long-term economic benefits, improve health and support national security.

The signatories have also suggested a meeting to talk through these concerns and to explore how media organisations can support better public understanding of climate issues.

Faith and the climate crisis

For many Christians, caring for the environment is an important part of their faith. The letter reflects wider concern in the Church about how climate issues are discussed, and how misinformation can affect public understanding.

The signatories stress the need for clear, balanced and well-informed reporting. Especially at a time when climate, energy and global events are so closely linked.

A shared responsibility

The letter says media organisations have an important role in shaping public debate. It calls for reporting that is fair, based on evidence, and transparent. Reporting that helps people engage with one of the biggest challenges facing the world today.
