Given the ongoing noise of voices who wish to stir up division and hatred in our beloved country, we stand together on St George’s Day to recommit to leading our communities in all we can do to love and serve our neighbours. St George is a figure who can unite not divide us.
On behalf of people of goodwill in our communities we are proud of our diverse nation as we come together to speak up for the values we all share - mutual respect, tolerance, free speech, hospitality and the rule of law. We have far more in common than that which divides us.
We commit ourselves to promoting and prioritising friendships and events that strengthen our common bond. Commemorations, community events, celebrating festivals, sporting moments and the use of educational activities to promote respect for each other and to undermine prejudice.
We stand in solidarity with those who find themselves under daily pressure because of antisemitism, anti Muslim hostility, anti migrant sentiments and other forms of discrimination. We are deeply concerned by ongoing attacks on synagogues, community facilities, mosques and on individuals.
Suffering causes hurt wherever it is found, and whoever it is caused by. We acknowledge all those who suffer and whatever can be done to alleviate and heal should be supported.
When we look back over the ups and downs of English history, we are inspired by those who led the way in confronting injustice and prejudice, such as our local Kindertransport hero Sir Nicholas Winton. We are determined that shameful episodes of hatred, violence and discrimination should not be repeated and will not be allowed to divide our communities.
