Oxford church shortlisted in conservation awards

St Margaret’s Church in North Oxford is one of the finalists in the Oxford Preservation Trust Awards.

An Oxford church has been shortlisted in a prestigious architecture and conversation competition.

St Margaret’s Church in North Oxford is one of the finalists in the adaptive re-use category of the Oxford Preservation Trust (OPT) Awards 2026.

Now in their 49th year, the OPT Awards celebrate excellence in design, historic conservation and sustainability across Oxford.

The adaptive re-use category recognises projects that breathe new life into Oxford’s existing buildings, adapting them for modern life while retaining their historic character and significance. Judges look for creative approaches that sensitively balance contemporary requirements with heritage significance.

The St Margaret’s project featured major internal improvements, including underfloor heating, improved accessible facilities, and reuse and refurbishment of spaces for a kitchen, as well as areas for administration, flower preparation and children’s play.

Jennie Schillig, senior church buildings office at the Diocese of Oxford, said: “The parish were a pleasure to work with, and I am delighted that the project has been successfully completed.

“I am sure that their updated and reordered church will serve them well into the future. “

The St Margaret’s project team included Conservation Architects,  JG Restorations Ltd, BLB Kilminster Beer and Lawfull Associates.

The adaptive re-use category was won last year by the team behind the renovation of Harris Manchester College Chapel.

The winners will be announced on Wednesday 4 November at a ceremony at St John’s College.
