Archbishop of York among delegates at Revd Polly's racial justice workshop

The Revd Polly Falconer, the Racial Justice Adviser for the diocese, was invited to lead a half-day workshop on racial justice and unconscious bias to the leadership team in York last week.

Those in attendance included Archbishop Stephen, as well as the Bishop of Hull, the Bishop of Selby, and a number of directors.

Areas covered included the impact of racial bias, recognising that we all have unconscious bias, and the case for equity and inclusion.

The Revd Polly said: "It was good to be invited to facilitate alongside my counterpart in York, Gerald Fox.

“The feedback from the event was really positive. There was a real sense of appreciation that they were given the space and inspiration to consider the issues.

"What they found particularly eye-opening and insightful were examples of the specific barriers that can exist in churches.

"They were worried that taking part would be seen as somehow performative, but I reassured them that very senior people giving up half a day to do this was actually leading by example."

As well as her work for the Diocese of Oxford, the Revd Polly is funded by the Church of England's Racial Justice Unit to deliver support to other dioceses around the country.

She added: "The diocese should be proud that what we do has been recognised and that we are leading the way at a very high level on this nationally."
