Chaplain - Merton College, University of Oxford

Merton College is seeking to appoint an experienced priest to the post of Chaplain. One of the College’s objects is to maintain the College Chapel as a place of public worship pursuing the highest standards of liturgical, homiletical, and musical excellence. The Chapel dates back to the end of the 13th century and stands at the heart of the College as a witness to Christian worship over almost 750 years. Today the Chapel is home to a lively and diverse Christian community which continues this faithful offering of worship with daily services during term time.

The main duties of the post are to oversee a programme of divine worship and regularly conduct services in the College Chapel, oversee the provision of music in the Chapel, support the College’s livings and make a significant pastoral contribution within the College community. The successful applicant will lead and manage the Chapel team and manage the Chapel budget. They will support alumni relations, make an active intellectual or academic contribution to the College and contribute to the Diocese of Oxford, and the national life of the Church of England.

The successful applicant will be an ordained priest of the Church of England or of a Church in full communion with the Church of England and will have a strong track record in the Anglican choral tradition, excellent leadership skills demonstrating a collaborative and collegial approach and experience in building external links with other faiths and communities. The postholder will also need to demonstrate the willingness to undertake the wider duties and obligations of a Fellow of the College.

Salary: £61,198-£70,918 p.a. plus allowances.

Contract: Permanent, Full-time
