Welcome from Bishop Steven and the DioSec
Thank you for your interest in the role of Director of Mission and Ministry in the Diocese of Oxford, which has arisen due to the retirement of our current post holder, who has enjoyed 30 years of fruitful ministry in the diocese (nine as Director).
This is a critical appointment for the diocese, as your leadership will bring ongoing life both to our strategic vision, to be a more Christ-like Church for the sake of God’s world, and the delivery of our most important and complex projects. Mission and Ministry is the largest department within Church House and at the heart of our work of supporting parishes, chaplaincies and schools.
Central to your role will be to bring new disciples and new ministers into the life of the Diocese of Oxford and to ensure that clergy and lay leaders are well equipped to carry out their roles in the life and leadership of the local church. We want to build strong, sustainable parishes, led by inspiring and collaborative people of faith, working alongside engaged and committed congregations. We want to encourage far more children and young people into faith and worship. We want to broaden and deepen access to learning and formation not only for ministry but for the whole of life and to share the word of the Lord in fresh and compelling ways, including online channels for learning.
We want to ensure that we provide the support, resources and encouragement that will make most difference to parishes and to the achievement of the strategic objectives the diocese discerns as key to what God is wanting to do aiming us at this time. You will be building on strong foundations forged in recent years, but we are ambitious for spiritual growth and renewal – we pray for someone who can take forward the momentum gained; we are looking for an individual with a wide range of gifts and talents.
This is a role where you can make a difference to the spiritual lives of all the communities across the three counties. The geography of the diocese contains areas of affluence and deprivation, urban and rural churches, cities and hamlets, and is not without its challenges. The diocese needs to respond to the needs of all.
You will be an accomplished leader, able to bring out the strengths of teams and team members, including in the areas of:
- Vocations and formation for ministry, including discipleship and ministry training;
- Working to bring children, young people and families to deepen their connection to the church;
- Social justice and environmental action, building on our pledge to work for a fairer, more sustainable future;
- Growing new congregations;
- The Learning Hub, our online resource to deepen knowledge and explorations into faith.
We hope our job description, personal specification and dedicated webpages will give you the detail you need to take forward your application, along with our encouragement to contact either of us beforehand if you would like to learn more ahead of applying (details below). We believe we offer a positive, affirming workplace, with space in turn for your gifts to thrive. We look forward to hearing from you.
