About Us
The Oxford Diocesan Board of Finance (ODBF) is seeking a passionate and dedicated volunteer to foster understanding, and support churches as they draw alongside Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities. In this role, you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference by creating and supporting churches across the deaneries of Burnham & Slough, Maidenhead & Windsor, Bracknell, Sonning and Reading, plus the Denham area. The nature of the work will depend to some extent on the individual who takes up this role, drawing on their experience and skills, with support from the diocesan Social Justice Adviser.
Key Responsibilities:
• Keep abreast of news and policy affecting Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities, and learn from lived experiences of Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller individuals.
• Assist churches in fostering understanding and challenging discrimination and racism towards Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities
• Create and facilitate the ‘Gypsy, Roma, & Traveller Advocates Network’ of local church leaders who are already, or who would like to, support Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities.
• With the Social Justice Adviser’s support, there may be opportunity to work with others to co-create responses (eg advocacy or campaigning) to address emerging issues facing Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities.
What We’re Looking For:
• A strong interest in issues affecting Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities.
• A belief in the church’s part in tackling inequality, discrimination, and racism.
• Understanding of and empathy for the work of the Church of England as well as ability to subscribe to our Christian ethos and values.
• Strong communication, organisation, and facilitation skills.
• Self-starter, with ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable:
• Experience of facilitating a network and presenting to groups of people.
• We would particularly welcome applications from Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller people and/or have experience of working directly with Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller individuals or communities.
What We Offer:
• Training and support to facilitate the new church network, develop advocacy skills, and grow understanding of issues affecting Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities.
• The opportunity to be part of a compassionate, purpose-driven team.
• Flexible hours and a supportive environment to work around personal commitments.
If you are looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity to help make a difference, we would love to hear from you!
We invite anyone interested to have an informal conversation with the diocesan Social Justice Adviser, Hannah Ling (07584206531), to explore this role.
