The former Prime Minister, Theresa May MP, has shared a video message with children and young people across the diocese encouraging them to write to their local MP about the importance of action on climate change.
In the autumn term, schools and youth and children’s groups across the diocese are taking part in the Be the Change initiative helping children to be agents of change in responding to the climate and environmental emergency.
During October, ahead of the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow in November, schools are hosting Be Vocal themed days aimed at helping children and young people to use their voices to Be Vocal and speak up for the planet.
In a video to children and young people in the diocese, Theresa May, MP for Maidenhead in Berkshire, shared a message about the ways they can show their support for the planet and how they can ask their local politician to take action:
“There is a really significant meeting take place in Glasgow next month, when world leaders are coming together to make some big decisions about the future of our climate, the environment, the future of our planet, and that’s about your future too.
“So, I hope you are going to write to your politicians, to your member of parliament. Write to your local politicians and tell them why climate change is so important and why it really matters that world leaders take the right decision next month”.
Be Vocal encourages teachers to find a day in the school calendar to gather messages from children and young people to Alok Sharma, President of COP26, and his colleagues in government to encourage bold climate commitments. Letters and messages from children and young people will be collated and sent to their MPs and Alok Sharma ahead of COP26.
Children and young people will also hear from Bishop Steven talking about climate change and the role of the House of Lords in parliament. The resources prompt children to think about how local churches in their area can help the environment.
The Be the Change initiative is a new diocesan campaign encouraging schools, children’s and youth groups to hold four themed days during the autumn term to help raise awareness and help pupils consider the action they can take to help the climate.
