Bishop John has welcomed the historic decision by the General Synod to allow women bishops. He said: "I am delighted that the General Synod voted in favour of the legislation today which means that we will have women bishops at last.
The debate was a good one and the tone was gracious."In retrospect, although it felt catastrophic to many of us at the time, it seems we were saved from ourselves when the vote went down in 2012, because in this new legislation we have something better and stronger."I believe we can now move forward with confidence that the necessary safeguards are in place for those very few Anglicans who can't accept women bishops."For myself, it is a day to celebrate the full ministry of our women clergy, and I look forward to welcoming women bishops among us in the near future."
