An art installation for Pentecost has taken centre stage at St John the Evangelist church in Newbury.
The artwork, which featured multi-coloured fabric suspended from a ring in the ceiling, was created by Associate Minister the Revd Gary Collins and a member of the congregation, Melanie Brown who is an artist and engineer.
Gary said: “I try to do different things for Pentecost. The idea of ribbons came to me, ribbons suspended in the centre of church, like the breath of God, the symbols of Pentecost. Wonder, awe, colour, movement, celebration. The art weaves into the liturgy and this corresponds with what St John’s tries to do in the community.”
The installation was in place for the congregation as they came to church to mark Pentecost, one of the lesser known festivals which celebrates the day God sent his Holy Spirit down to earth. It will be at the church for three weeks initially.
Gary added: “We saw lot of awe, surprise and delight. A lot of people have fed back afterwards how it enhanced their imagination during the Pentecost service – that is what I am always trying to do, to make people think.”
