Hong Kongers welcome in Lunar New Year with cultural event

Lunar New Year celebrations held at St Peter’s in Maidenhead recently were attended by many Hong Kongers in the town.

As well as a party to mark New Year, the event was an opportunity for those Hong Kongers who have moved to the UK since 2020 to celebrate their culture. St Peter’s is part of a network of churches welcoming people who have arrived via the BN(O) visa scheme.

Geoff Yeung, International Welcome Minister, said: “Starting a new life in a different country is never easy. The church plays a crucial role as a hub for migrants like us, actively helping us integrate into life in the UK while also offering friendship and a warm welcome into the local community.”

He added: “These festival celebration parties serve an important purpose beyond just fun and good food. On one hand, they provide a space for us to share live experiences and support one another; on the other, they allow us to pass on the traditions and cultural heritage we cherish to the next generation."

Partygoers enjoyed traditional food and games, as well as calligraphy sessions where good luck messages were written on red paper to display at home.
