Following a successful celebration of Jane Austen's connection with Kintbury last year, St Mary's Church recently hosted an afternoon of events for a group of enthusiasts from Denman College in Marcham.
The visit was organised by Jane Austen expert Hazel Jones. Local historian Penny Fletcher gave a talk on the history of the connection describing the people and the places that Jane, her family and friends knew. Tessa Lock and Ellen Lock Ireland then gave a dramatic reading based on the letters of Jane Austen where she talks about events and friends in Kintbury during her lifetime.
This included comments from friends expressing concern about Jane's health during her last visit to Kintbury in 1816.
Jane died in Winchester in 1817. Afterwards a cream tea was provided by Alison Hartwright and Marion Grey in the church room. The organisers of the event are considering running another public event based around St.
Mary's church next year, 2017. News and articles about Jane Austen's connection can be found on the website, where future events will be posted.
