Revd Canon John Tattersall awarded Royal Honour
Processing from Limehouse Church to the Foundation for the formal installation of the new Master.
We were delighted to hear that our current diocesan Board of Finance chair, the Revd Canon John Tattersall, has been made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO). Speaking about his award, John said,"Being made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order is a great honour, not least because it is a personal award from the Queen, who is the patron of the Royal Foundation of St Katharine's .
St Katharine's offers subsidised rates for accommodation and retreats for clergy and others who work for the Church. "I became a trustee, or member of Court, in 2009, having never heard about St Katharine's before.
However, when I visited, I was entranced.
I became chair of Court in 2012 on the death of the previous chair and have been immensely privileged to lead the foundation through some very interesting times since then.
Of particular note has been our expansion of operations, particularly in respect of our outreach to the local community in Tower Hamlets . "The Royal Victorian Order was established in 1896 by Queen Victoria.
It recognises distinguished personal service to the monarch of the Commonwealth realms, members of the monarch's family, or to any viceroy or senior representative of the monarch.
The present monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, is the sovereign of the order and admission remains at the sole discretion of the monarch. It's been a busy few weeks for John, who was also recently made an honorary canon, with a service at Oxford's Christ Church Cathedral.
John had a successful career in London as a chartered accountant, rising to be a senior partner at PwC before receiving a call to ordination.
He was ordained as a deacon in 2007 at the age of 55 and as priest the following year; since then he has served as a self-supporting minister in the Wykeham Benefice in north Oxfordshire and was vocations adviser in the Deddington Deanery before becoming chair of the Oxford Diocesan Board of Finance in 2013.
He also has permission to officiate in the Diocese of London.
He was for many years treasurer and latterly chair of council of St Augustine's College of Theology (formerly the South East Institute for Theological Education) where he originally trained for ordination.
As well as his work with the Royal Foundation of St Katharine, he is also a trustee of the Community of St Anselm at Lambeth Palace.
