Bishop Steven was among the guests when King Charles visited Oxford recently to open the King Charles III Wing at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.
His Royal Highness is a patron of the centre and gave its inaugural lecture in the 1990s, as the Prince of Wales.
Speaking at the centre’s new wing opening ceremony, the King said he had seen the centre "grow from a modest hut" into an "internationally renowned institution". Adding the centre, now celebrating its 40th year, had become a "beacon of Islamic scholarship".
The King went on: "The centre's ongoing commitment to objective scholarship and international cooperation, underpinned by principles of dialogue, deep understanding and mutual respect, is more imperative than ever in today's world.
"I need hardly say I am extremely heartened that the centre continues to play such a significant role in that globally critical endeavour.”
Bishop Steven said after the event: “It was very good to be present with many other faith leaders for the celebration of 40 years of the Islamic Study Centre and an honour to meet His Majesty the King.
“His Majesty’s care to build respect and understanding between world faiths has been a deep part of his own faith journey. The King took great care to meet and greet many of those who had come to the gathering and, of course, to see the Centre and the Gardens opened in his name.”
