Around 2,000 
poppies adorn St Michael’s Church in Tilehurst in a handmade tribute for Remembrance Day.
The waterfall was first put together by members of the church’s Knit and Natter group as part of a campaign to ‘Turn Tilehurst Red’ for the centenary of the end of the First World War in 2018. Since then the crafters have added to the display each year, including a horse depicted in purple blooms to commemorate the animals which took part in the war effort.
The Rector, the Revd Dr Liz Ratcliffe said: “I think that as the big wars of the 20th century fade out of living memory – there are very few people who lived through them let alone fought in them still alive – it is increasingly important that we make an effort to remember, to respect who did die.
“If you ignore history, you are at risk of repeating the mistakes of the past. We need to keep it fresh in people’s memories, how terrible those conflicts were, and respect the sacrifice those people made.”
