Responding to riots with love

Flowers, home-baked cakes and cards of support were delivered by hand to those affected by the recent far-right riots and violence across England.

The action was organised by the Oxford Citizens group who also put together a letter of support and solidarity which was sent to Oxford mosques. The card also included an invitation to meet and share their experiences and concerns, to develop the relationship between Oxford Citizens and Oxford mosques.

One of those who went along was Social Justice Advisor at the diocese Hannah Ling. She said: “I wanted to share this as an encouragement of these small acts of community building and solidarity in the wake of events that have shaken so many of us, and been particularly fearful for our Muslim, asylum seeker, and migrant neighbours.”

Hannah was joined by other members of Oxford Citizens to visit those staying at a hotel accommodating asylum seekers and also Asylum Welcome in Oxford, where there were able to chat with some of the people there.

The visitors also popped in to Asylum Welcome’s offices to express solidarity and thanks to the staff and volunteers working there. While there they chatted to staff who lead on the hotel work and wider project operations and it’s hoped this visit will lead to more opportunities for collaboration and support.
