Silver lining for Creationtide celebrations

Parishioners at St Mary Magdalene Church in Flaunden are celebrating being named as the 50th silver Eco Church in the diocese.

The Eco Church scheme, organised by Christian environmental charity A Rocha, inspires churches to take action for God’s creation so it’s rather fitting this news has come during Creationtide.

The church have launched a number of eco initiatives including recycling waste and re-wilding a section of their churchyard.

Associate minister the Revd Peggy Ludlow said: “We have installed a bug hotel in the wild area which has provided an astonishing variety of wildflowers.

“The challenge as a minister has been making the connection between the world that we live in and what God is doing. What responsibility do we have as God’s people for the planet around us and our more local space? That is the point, it is looking after local spaces, not just anywhere it’s the spaces where we have control.”

The church has an eco champion, Sarah Banks, who keeps the environmental issues front and centre of all they do, reminding the congregation why and how they can care for creation.

Peggy added: “You need someone who really is passionate about the world in which we live. God is the creator and our responsibilities lie in caring for the place that we have and the church needs to be a model. It matters and we cannot be careless about these things.”
