'The songs came pouring out of me'

The Revd Steve Flashman holding his guitar.Having not written a song for more than 25 years, no-one was more surprised than the Revd Steve Flashman himself when a Christian retreat prompted an ‘outpouring’ of creativity.

Singer-songwriter Steve, who is also the parish priest at Quainton and Oving, near Aylesbury, had hung up his guitar and was enjoying the joys of rural ministry before inspiration struck. Now he has released his 10th studio album, Lighting the Beacons.

He said: “It just poured out of me. And the Lighting of the Beacon theme really captured my imagination. That signal of hope. It’s not the big, important, powerful people that make a difference ultimately it’s the little people. People like me who don’t think we have a voice.

“And that’s the theme of the album how we can have a voice even when we feel we’re too small to matter. We all can make a difference.”

Known for his Christian music, Steve’s latest release is also rooted in his faith. It is also autobiographical in parts, where Steve describes some of the lyrics as ‘like a journal’.

He said: “There’s a number of songs on the album where, without realising it, I’ve started to deal with some of those things I faced in my own life. Hopefully it will relate to other people that are going through or have been through similar things. What I’m trying to say in the album is you don’t have to let your past define you.”

Steve’s album is the tenth in his career which began with him touring the world until he felt the call to be ordained and joined the diocese nine years ago.

Prior to that he had enjoyed decades on the road, appearing in venues like Wembley and the Royal Albert Hall, and bringing his brand of Christian rock to audiences around the world.

Steve’s album can be found on Spotify and other music streaming apps.
