What’s it like being a volunteer supporting newly arrived people in the UK with learning English?
Two local volunteers, part of the Language Learning Links project led by the Revd Canon Liz Jackson, Associate Archdeacon of Berkshire, share their experience of volunteering:
“I have found the experience most enriching. A feeling of contributing something useful for those who find themselves in a new country far from their homes and often family, through no fault of their own whether due to war or political pressure.
At the same time they give us a lesson in strength of character and determination to integrate and learn. In addition our exchanges provide an interesting insight into different cultures and visions for a better world. I am enjoying participating in this venture very much.” - Peter
“Volunteering with Language learning Links is a life-affirming hour a week for me. I have plenty of experience teaching new arrivals in the country but was less familiar with teaching online. Liz and the team helped me to manage the technology and there are plenty of materials that tutors can access on the website although I tend to prefer to make my own - and training available for anyone who wants it. New teachers usually work with a more experienced tutor for a while, as they find their feet. I have several able assistants, so we move to breakout rooms with smaller groups during the lesson, so that the participants get the chance to talk in smaller groups.
The learners are enthusiastic and hardworking and we enjoy getting to know them week by week. We focus on speaking and they always enjoy lessons about Britain and British culture as a way to practise the language. Knowing it is a constructive use of my time, makes it all the more enjoyable.” - Rachel
Could you volunteer your time?
The English language project is heading into its third year, and they are in need of more volunteers. You don’t need experience in teaching, you will get some training in the basics – you just need to like people and want to help them on their journey to a new life in the UK.
They are also keen to identify people who have a specialism (for instance in tax, property, schools admissions, applying for jobs) who would be willing to support one off question and answer sessions.
If you think you could offer some time to help to welcome people into our communities. Contact Liz Jackson.
