EVERYONE at St Nicholas CE School in Wallingford, Oxfordshire is celebrating the completion of an 18 month project to refurbish the outdoor areas. The work includes a new 60m multi surface path, a completely refurbished wildlife pond and a woodland storytelling space including a storytelling throne, a willow tunnel and magical seating. This work was funded by a lottery grant of £9,906.00 and by funds raised by Friends of St Nicholas, theParent Teacher Association for the school.
Grundons donated a skip for the Project, 10 workers from Scottish and Southern Energy cleared the wooded area with their diggers and chainsaws in two hours and more than 30 parents cleared an overgrown pond and replaced the fencing one Saturday. Culham Centre for Fusion Energy gave a grant of £300 for pond dipping equipment and wildlife identification, which are now used by the children.
Headteacher, David Jackson says, "The new resources and outside classroom space have dramatically changed the way the children interact with their outdoor play areas and the whole school has benefited from the fantastic way in which the parents and local businesses rallied to make all this work possible.
We are very grateful to the Lottery Fund and to everyone who helped and raised money for the project. "The school celebrated the completion of the work with a special assembly on 24 May with the town mayor and everyone involved with the project.
On the same day children took part in sponsored events including a bear hunt along the new multi colour texture path and the older children reciting the Duck in a Truck story, on the storytelling area.
