Working together to build a better Reading

The Reading Citizens Roundtable, hosted by Bishop Mary and Vice-Chancellor of Reading University, Robert Van de Noort, brought together 46 local leaders to explore how Community Organising methodology can build a better Reading for all.

Stories of campaign successes from nationwide Citizens UK alliances were shared, including how a group secured a new pedestrian crossing outside their school, won funding for mental health counsellors in all secondary schools across Brighton & Hove, and a national campaign which now prevents asylum seeking children from being detained.

Members of Reading Citizens shared how we often feel powerless or limited in the changes we can make in our communities, but how working together can make a bigger impact.

Bishop Mary said: “We've had a great afternoon at the University of Reading talking about Citizens UK and rebooting it in Reading. And I was sharing with the people gathered here that I've come away feeling really inspired about some small, tangible, significant things that we can do together.

“I feel really hopeful because often we feel overwhelmed at the need around us and we can't do anything ourselves, but together with such a great group of people, it's really possible.

“It’s been a really positive experience. I've come away feeling really energised.”

Attendees from faith (including churches), education, and charity organisations were invited to join and grow Reading Citizens, building on the foundations already laid of launching the initial network, community listening, and campaigns for safer streets in Reading, and improved food quality and nutrition in hotels accommodating asylum seekers.
